Guitar Strings Tuning

When the guitar strings are tuned to EADGBE, what key is the guitar in?

I've been trying to write some music for a band that involves guitar, but i can't seem to find out how much to transpose the harmonic line to make it fit for a guitar. According to what i have read, tuning a guitar to EADGBE, is called tuning to G, so does that mean that the guitar is in the key of G? Thanks.

You could think of the guitar as tuned to a G9add6. You could also look at it as Em7add11, or A9sus4. The point is, the guitar in standard tuning really isn't in a key, per say.

Most guitar songs wind up being in E or A. Hendrix and Robin Trower used C#m to good effect, because it allowed the open E strings to be the minor 3rd.

So, if you're writing for guitar, I'd recommend E, A, or even D as preferable keys (because it allows the guitarist to use open strings). And some of the best rock-n-roll has been written in those keys.

The exception would be Chuck Berry, who played a lot of songs in C. But, the reason behind that is because most of his music was written by his piano player. And C is a favorite key amoungst pianists (none of those pesky black keys).
