What is the best guitar pedal for nice gain?

I'm trying to refine my tone a bit since switching from a Crate amp with a gain channel to a Fender Twin Reverb. I don't want distortion/overdrive (my Big Muff Pi takes care of that), I just want a nice dirty gain.

I think you have your terms mixed up... I would characterize the Big Muff as a distortion, but certainly not an overdrive.... its a fuzz pedal, you can't get a clean tone out of it, so it doesn't qualify as overdrive.

For overdrive, pedals that I would recommend are the Zakk Wylde Overdrive (quite versatile, from light all the way up to a nice crunch), the TS-9 Tubescreamer (or any of its clones), or the Voodoo Sparkledrive.

I have nothing against the DS-1 as such, I just don't like the tone it tends to give (used a lot in alternative, punk, etc).
