Fender Amp Knobs

Amp compression and distortion and guitar circutry?

First question, I want an amp that has a lot of compression (or an amp good for playing music like blink 182's take off your pants and jacket) also what are your general opinions on greasebucket circutry on fenders. On the topic of greasebucket, how do you control tone because what i understand the tone knobs controls highs and lows, so what controls tone?

"Highs and Lows" - that IS "tone".
The "greasebucket" is pretty much a marketing ploy. For years Strat and Tele players have swapped out the capacitor on the volume control so the guitar stays bright when they turn down the volume. In the original Teles and Strats, rolling off the volume even a little radically changes how bright the pickup sounds, and now you can get it from the factory. But what single coil fender have you ever heard that was "not bright enough" - usually guys roll the volume off a little to do exactly what the "greasebucket" says it's avoiding - to take that ear-splitting edge off at lower volume. But there are trade-offs any time you start changing out passive controls. It may be a little brighter, but it also may also reduce the output for instance. Or, it could also impact the lows, so yeah, it's brighter but you lose that midrange "honk" strats are famous for. There's no free lunch in an analog circuit. If you like the sound - fine. But use your ears (listening) , not your eyes (reading) to decide.

On humbucker guitars - I've yet to see a good player do anything with those tone controls other than keep them on 10. Turning them down goes from "muddy" to "muddier" . To me, tone knobs on a Gibson are worthless. I usually disable them altogether or use the hole for a coil split or in/out of phase switch .

What does work IMO are active treble/bass controls on an active guitar. But not everyone is into that.

Otherwise, your "sound" is a combination of your guitar and your amp and your hands. There is nothing as "toneful" as a vintage Strat or Les Paul pushing the front end of a good TUBE amp into distortion. The way a class A circuit responds to your touch and clips is really the key to "vintage" electric guitar tone - and there is no one right answer, other than now there are 1001 "boutique" pedal builders who are all trying to capture that magic in a stomp box. Good luck finding that - the best thing is to spend your money on a good guitar you like, and a great tube amp. There is no "modeling" in the world and no "stomp boxes" and no "tone knobs" that can substitute IMO. And that is why Fender can ask, and get, $1000 for a FIVE WATT '57 Champ amp tweed re-issue that has only one volume control, and no tone controls at all. The sound of that amp cranked up is what all of those magic boxes are trying to re-create.
