Why are my guitar strings too stiff on my Fender DG-7/DG-8 Acoustic?

I have a Fender DG-8 acoustic guitar and the strings are way too stiff. I have to press really hard on the fret to get to the note to sound. If I don't, I can hear the string rattling against the fret.

I changed the strings with light gauge(?) strings and it is still very stiff.

This is a $100 guitar so it's on the cheap side. But my friend's $150 Yamaha guitar is much more easier to play and the strings are not stiff at all.

Anyone know what's wrong with my guitar? Is this something I can fix?

I've been through my share of inexpensive guitars, so it sounds like your strings are way too high off the fretboard. It probably needs a truss rod adjustment. You sound like a beginner, so don't do this yourself. I'd take the guitar to a local shop with an in-house tech- call around, so you dont' have to leave it to be sent out for 2 weeks. If it's just a truss rod adjustment, they can usually do it while you wait.-Good Luck ,keep playing!
