Cool Guitar Effects

how can I do this guitar effect?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZimumOkA1s
in this song, there's a cool effect I want to learn. specifically, it's just after "I don't wanna stop" in the chorus.
pinch harmonics are easy. straight up. it just takes a lot of practice.
ok what you have to do is with your picking hand, put your thumb behind your pic so it sticks out just a little. when you hit a string with your pic your thumb should follow shortly after and hit the string. the way that i do it is i hold the pic with my thumb right before the edge. when i want to do the pinch i squeeze the pic harder to flatten out my thumb and push the skin out farther. also it helps if you dont really strum straight down. i like to kind of scoop under the string(in a more flick-of-the-wrist motion). thats the simple explanation of it.
however there is one more thing that people never explain about pinch harmonics. if you feel that you are doing everything correctly with the way you are holding the pic and hitting hte string then you should consider 2 things. ok what pickup settin are you using. if your using one that gives a warmer sound then switch to your hottest pickup. pinch harmonics need that squeel. also, where are you strumming. some guitars have specific spots over the pickups that pinch harmonics will sound the best. mine is over my pickup closest to my neck.
practice makes perfect. it didnt take me that long to get the concept of it but what really helped was i would just write a bunch of licks and then sit and think "ok where can i put a pinch harmonic in." and just hammer it out. find things that dont have a pinch in it and then add it. if you really like doing pinch harmonics, like i do, then it will help add personality to your playing. good luck dude!

Rocktron Reaction Dynamic Filter Guitar Effects Pedal $79 Are you searching for something new to add to your setup and spice things up? Are you a guitar player who wants to add a crazy, phasey and downright out of sight twisted effect to your pedal arsenal. Maybe you are a bass player searching for something that will give you that funk with lots of punch? The Reaction Dynamic Filter utilizes harmonic phase shifting effect that sweeps the frequency spectrum from high to low providing a unique one-of-a-kind sound. Since a dynamic filter is triggered by your pick attack, the harder you pick the string, the higher the resonant frequencies become. The sensitivity control determines the frequency at which the filter will begin its phase shifting. For bass players, lower sensitivity settings provide a funky walking talking swanky arpeggio effect tracking your pick dynamics to produce a smooth and cool feel. Turn on the distortion to make it growl. For guitar players higher sensitivity settings provide a more expressive "zipper" effect that is suited ideally for lead breaks. Play around with it and you will find that there are a lot of possibilities, all the way to a searing razor edge off the hook vibe controlled by your pick attack.Level control determines the output level of the effect. An included distortion button gives you a little more "dirt" when playing. The footswitch on the Reaction Dynamic Filter controls On/Off status as shown by the LED indicator. Reaction stomp boxes run on a 9V Alkaline battery, or may also be powered by Rocktron's DC OnTap Universal Power Supply adaptor.Rocktron's Reaction Series pedals are built into a rugged metal slim form factor chassis, taking up as little space as possible on your pedal board. The Reaction Dynamic Filter is a true bypass pedal: when you turn it off, it is out of your signal path. The Reaction Dynamic Filter can be placed in the signal chain before or after a distortion, but it is recommended to place it after. If using multiple pedals such as delays and other modulation effects, try the Reaction Dynamic Filter in different parts of the signal chain until you find the sound you personally prefer. |

Carl Martin EchoTone Delay Guitar Effects Pedal $462 The Carl Martin Echotone delay guitar effects pedal may just be the only delay pedal you ever need. Imagine switching from a Manual time setting to a Tap time setting right at your feet, so you can play with your favorite slap-back echo on rhythm to a Tap (tempo), and set echo for that massive lead or solo. Combine this echo flavoring by installing a chorus, flange or even distortion pedal in the insert loop, and the switchable trail function at bypass and you get an echo effect pedal of unbelievable sound and dimension. The Carl Martin delay pedal's Echo switch activates or bypasses the Echotone, indicated by the LED on the unit being activated. Please note the Echotone is not true bypass, it features a high-quality buffered bypass, to ensure long cabling without loss. The delay pedal's Select switch lets you choose between the manual time setting and the Tap Tempo function. This function allows you to shift between two presets easily. The Tap Tempo lets you set the delay time simply by tapping the desired tempo on the Tempo switch with your foot (tap a minimum of two times or more as the Carl Martin EchoTone guitar pedal will always set the tempo after the last two taps). With the Manual time function chosen on the select switch you set the desired delay time on the chicken-head knob. Turning it clockwise creates faster delay time, while turning it counterclockwise produces longer delay. The Carl Martin EchoTone pedal's Echo knob lets you mix between dry and wet; the Feedback knob lets you choose the amount of echo you want; and the Tone knob lets you adjust the voicing on the repeats, from dark position in full counterclockwise to light in full clockwise. The tone will only affect the repeats, not the overall sound from the guitar. With the delay pedal's Loop you can insert an external effect device, like a chorus, phase, overdrive pedal, or EQ. With this you can either color or modulate the echo in a multitude of different ways with really cool results. Once again, the sounds produced in the loop only work on the repeats, not on the overall tone coming from the guitar. Inserting a modulation effect into the loop requires you to regulate the echo and feedback to lesser settings, as the feedback can go into oscillation if left in the same setting without modulation. The delay pedal's Trail switch lets guitarists choose whether you want trails on or off when in bypass mode. Trails are the echo ringing out when you bypass the effect pedal, in off position the effect stops immediately when bypassed. As with all the Danish built Carl Martin effects, the Echotone delay pedal comes in a low-profile housing, coated in a stunning off-white color, with a built-in 12v (+/-) regulated power supply. The Carl Martin Echotone's built-in power supply has an attached power wall plug cord, to run only on main power, not 9V battery or 9V adapter. |

Keeley 4-Knob Compressor Guitar Effects Pedal $259 Keeley's most popular pedal, the Keeley compressor has become an industry standard for stomp box compression. The sound will inspire, and your music will flow freely—just plug the compressor pedal in and let your head, heart, and fingers fly. The sound quality of the Keeley compressor is rarely heard in the stompbox arena and is only seen in very expensive rackmount or tube equipment. It is a true audiophile and studio-grade compressor, with exotic rackmount-quality in a stomp box. The Keeley compressor pedal ships with the 9V DC jack at the top end of the guitar pedal and use the same type of power supply used by nearly all guitar effect manufacturers.Internal Attack Control The compressor pedal has an Internal Attack control, designed for bass players with high-output active pickups or active pedal boards with buffers. Sensitivity Control The Keeley compressor pedal also has an Input Sensitivity Control, meaning you can use this in your studio to run keyboards, drum machines, drum mics, even master recordings and other line-level uses. You'll raise your signal to a new level of sonic awesomeness. True bypass switching circuit True bypass means that when the effect is off your guitar tone will not be affected at all. The true bypass circuit makes sure you have absolutely no tone loss or signal reduction through the compressor pedal in the off/bypass mode.Triple-pole double-throw switch This switch makes sure you have absolutely no tone loss or signal reduction through the Keeley 4-knob compressor even in the off mode. Other compressors use a cheap switch and design that runs down your signal even when off or if the battery goes weak. The Sustain Control The 9 O'clock position should be barely noticeable. It will just take out really loud sudden peaks, this is great for protecting your speakers and the like. The 12 O'clock position provides the right presence for using the Keeley compressor pedal continuously while performing. The 3 O'clock position is great for solos. It really adds some cool effects to your playing dynamics. Only when really cranked do you get the pluck sound of your pick emphasized.Tone-tested components The Keeley compressor effect has nothing but tone-tested components and has true bypass switching. Effect switching incorporates a triple pole-double throw switch. You will have clean unaffected sound when in the bypass mode, with an LED for effect indication. Metal film resistors and capacitors ensure the cleanest compressor on the market. Hand matched transistors to less than 1% tolerance ensure you get a perfectly compressed signal, no chance for unwanted distortions. For those wanting a better tone than that of Trey Anastasio from Phish or David Gilmore of Pink Floyd or the Edge of U2 this is it. Power supply The DC jack is the standard type fitting just about every power supply out there. The Voodoo Labs Pedal Power, MXR DC Brick, Boss, Ibanez, etc. power supplies work perfectly with the compressor |

MI Audio Blues Pro v.3 Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal $129.95 The MI Audio Blues Pro Overdrive Guitar Pedal's no-nonsense circuitry offers effects that are very 'immediate'. There are no internal trimmers, so that with the Blues Pro you get a very easy-to-use pedal, with the classic configuration of Gain, Tone and Volume. The MI Audio Blues Pro is a bit compressed, which gives the pedal a bit of extra punch. Blues Pro is an overdrive that also sounds throaty in high gain settings. In the Fuzz mode the tone control becomes more of a 'sponge' control. With the tone all the way up, the Blues Pro pedal sounds like a louder version of the original. As you turn the Tone control down, the response time of the Blues Pro increases. This sounds particularly cool on chords. Turn the MI Audio Blues Pro Overdrive effect's Tone control all the way down, and the tone takes a second or two to settle. |

ZVex Vextron Series Mastotron Fuzz Guitar Effects Pedal Blue $149 The ZVex Mastotron Effects Pedal, another in the Vextron series, is a heavy silicon-based fuzz pedal with a lot of controls—volume, tone, pulse width, fuzz, and relax/push. The relax/push controls the input impedance to the pedal. The guitar effects pedal knobs let you adjust for quieter pickups, or softer guitars, and turn it towards the relax setting as you put in active pickups, and turn it all the way to the relax setting for special effects and for line-level signals if you are re-amping a bass off a recorded track. The Mastotron's fuzz control is a wide control over the fuzz depth. Pulse width control goes from a narrow pulse all the way to a nearly square wave pulse. The tone control shaves off the high end. A sub switch lets you set how many subs you have with a "2-1-3" arrangement while the dedicated volume knob controls how loud the guitar pedal gets. Plug your guitar (or any effect's output) into the input jack. Plug the output into an amp or other effect's input. Set the amp for a warm clean tone on bypass. Turn on the pedal and rock out. Using a guitar or bass, turn the Relax/Push knob down a bit if you need to until the fuzz sounds immediate and tight. Turn the Vextron Mastotron's fuzz control until you're happy, and set the PW to square (counter-clockwise). Adjust the tone for the treble amount you want, and use the sub switch on 3 for full heavy subs for bass or 2 if the subs are overloading your amp.Set your amp on your favorite clean tone for the most blistering results, while a distorted sound can be very cool as well. Play it into your favorite distortion pedals or direct into the amp for different textures. Try putting weird effects into the ZVex Mastotron pedal and adjust the Relax/Push knob for best interfacing. If the performance of your fuzz pedal seems diminished or the LED becomes very dim, it's time to change your battery. Remove the four screws on the bottom of the effect pedal and carefully remove and replace the old battery, putting it back exactly in the center of the pedal on edge so that it is gripped tightly by the lid when it is screwed back in place. |

Dwarfcraft Power Struggle Power Supply Guitar Effects Pedal $95 The Dwarfcraft Power Struggle augments your effects pedal with the ability to starves your stombox of power. The Power Struggle consists of a super simple circuit that essentially slows down the power to your pedal, making it (sometimes) do whacky stuff. Fit the Power Struggle's standard-size center-negative plug into your effects pedal. You've now made that pedal adjustable. The Power Struggle also has a 1/4" jack for an expression pedal (not included), so you can also control the variable resistance with your foot. Any time you starve a circuit of power, it's going to lose volume. So with the Power Struggle connected, you can turn up the volume on your amp or effects pedal. Think of the resulting sound as a normal level when the Power Struggle is engaged, and just a volume boost when not engaged. With the Power Struggle's variable resistor knob, you have full control over the amount of power sent to your pedal, with strange but cool results. The Power Struggle accepts both center-negative and center-positive power plugs. It puts out the power in a center-negative plug—a very common power plug for many effects pedals on the market. |

Carl Martin Classic Flange Guitar Effects Pedal $135.1 Carl Martin's Vintage Flanger has 4 knobs to control Speed, Depth, Pre-delay and Feedback, plus a dual speed mode that is foot-switchable. There are no rules with a Flanger, just plug this versatile modulation pedal in and play, play, play. The Carl Martin Classic flange pedal's Bypass switch turns the effect on and off. The Classic Flange is not "true bypass," it has high-quality buffer circuitry. The Green LED lights up when the flange pedal is activated. The Carl Martin Classic Flanger offers two settings of speed, fast/slow select on the footswitch. The fast/slow settings share the same speed knob, therefore when changing the speed setting in fast mode, it will also change the speed in slow mode. The effect pedal's Speed knob controls the speed of the Flanger's sweep. In fast mode it can go very fast, sounding reminiscent of a Leslie rotating horn. At slowest, the speed provides a sweep that stretches very wide, good for alternate rhythm figures. The Depth goes from subtle to extreme, and works in tandem with the feedback control. The pre-delay sets the short delay time in which the Flanger operates, set to the extreme left it is the shortest time available, and to the extreme right it is the longest time available. The Carl Martin pedal's Pre-Delay controls what frequencies the Flanger accentuates, as it is a moving filter that sweeps up and down following the Speed control. In other words, it sets the flavor of the Carl Martin Flanger pedal's tone, from very swirly to rising and sinking curve, and everything in between. The Red LED flashes the speed setting in real time, so there is a visual indication on the speed chosen that flashes in bypass mode. The depth controls the amount of effect. It works closely together with the feedback. The pedal's Feedback controls the amount of signal that sends back through the sweepfilter, at low settings it gives a chorus-like sound. Increasing it adds a more hollow, ghostly sound, feeding some frequencies, and damping others. Simply put, it controls the amount of flanging needed for the effect, working closely with the Depth, and can be set into a controlled oscillation where the speed can be manipulated for fast or slow oscillations. As with all the Vintage pedals, the Carl Martin Classic Flanger comes in a solid, die-cast housing with the cool CM graphics and chicken-head knobs. The effect pedal can be powered by 9v battery or a regulated 9v power supply (not included). |

Fulltone GT-500 FET Distortion + Booster and Overdrive Guitar Effects Pedal Red $179.15 The GT-500 Effects Pedal from Fulltone is a discrete FET Hi-Gain Distortion and Overdrive Booster in one box. You could think of them as 2 separate pedals, or think of them as stages to be linked together for endless combinations. The Hi-Gain side has Volume, Distortion knobs, Bass, Mid, and Highs minipots. Its Booster Side has Volume, Overdrive knobs, Bass and Highs minipots.Hard-clipped distortion—the way most guitar pedals achieve distortion—at one point in a circuit can be cool, but stage after stage of FET (GT-500) is very real, very amplike, and has ridiculous amounts of sustain even at low volume. It does the great chunky low-string rhythm stuff and cleans up incredibly well when you turn down the guitar's volume. The Fulltone GT500 contains 9 FETs, 2 Mosfets, and 1 Transistor with no opamps or clipping diodes used. What's special about the EQ? The Hi-Gain side has a discrete Inductor-Driven Midrange circuit—never been done in a pedal before. There's a wah-wah inductor inside the pedal that gives the Midrange control its ability to drastically increase or decrease the entire Low Mid, Mid, and Hi-Mid frequencies, to comical proportions. All this is done without any opamps—this has 100% discrete matched FETs.This Mid control mixed with a strong Bass and Treble control help give the Fulltone GT-500 the ability to dial in more variations than a simple tone control, which can only roll off the Highs. The Series Select Switch allows you to choose which pedal comes first (allowing you to instantly change the order of the 2 circuits). For example: A clean boost slamming into the front end a Distortion sounds way different than a Distortion followed by the clean boost, and when the EQs of the respective sides come into play, it's a wide-open canvas. Regardless of which side of the effects pedal is designated as first in line, you can still use each side by itself, completely independent of the other side. |
